To Support... Instruct... Inspire....
The Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA) is an organization dedicated
to making the Oregon State
University (OSU) community aware of and responsive to the needs
and concerns of Black graduate students. It serves as the main professional
and social support body for these students during their tenure at OSU.
BGSA is particularly concerned with issues of social isolation, mentorship,
the microscope/invisibility dichtomy, and the recruitment and retention of
Black students into graduate school. We strive to keep our focus on school,
graduation, and living a balanced positive life.
BGSA encourages the development of interdependent relationships
between Black graduate students and OSU faculty with a particular
focus on Black faculty and staff. We also establish interdependent
relationships between Black graduate and undergraduate students,
especially through the OSU Ujima Education Office and/or the
Black Cultural Center.
In addition, BGSA
cultivates communication with Black graduate and undergraduate
students attending neighboring colleges and universities. We also seek
to enhance and sustain a relationship with the local Black community here in Corvallis.
